Van Mahotsav, the forest festival was conceptualized and initiated as a national activity in 1950 by the then Union Minister of Agriculture and Food, Dr. K.M. Munshi Ji. Randhawa, a Punjabi botanist who organized a week-long tree plantation activity from 20-27 July in 1947, which was attended by many renowned personalities at that time.

This week is chosen because of the fact that in many parts of India this period experiences the south-west monsoon, providing a favorable condition for afforestation. Van Mahotsav Day serves as a significant day that sees Vast majority of tree plantation drives with the participation of many stakeholders such as government bodies, non profit organizations, educational institutions and many individuals as well. This day particularly gives the message of planting trees to make the earth sustainable and healthy.
The main motto behind Van Mohatsav Day/ Week is to plant as many trees as possible for a green earth. As per latest India State of Forest Report (ISFR 2021), India is ranked 10th in the world, with 24.4% of land area under forest and tree cover, even though it accounts for 2.4 % of the world surface. Similarly, the National Forest Policy (NFP) 1988 envisages that 33% of the geographical area should be under forest or tree cover. Therefore, an event like Van Mohatsav has significant values.
